I have been married to my best friend, Tim, since April 2002. We have three sweet little girls, Zoe (Aug '05), Lydia (Feb '07) and Rachel (Oct '12); and our little boy, Titus (Sept '09). My husband is a 3rd grade teacher and we love our life as we raise our kids together!
I joined Mary Kay in 2001, two weeks before Tim proposed. I had reluctantly gone to a Mary Kay skin care class after thinking "Why would I go to that? Isn't Mary Kay just for older women that wear a lot of makeup?!" I loved the skin care and got started on it right away, and ate my words as I learned more about this incredible company. I heard two things: (1) it only costs $100 to start your business and (2) you can profit 50% on everything you sell. Sign me up! I knew I would never "do Mary Kay" but I would love the extra cash here and there.
I was a full-time project manager and interpreter for an internet company that had big projects working with the Ecuadorian and Colombian governments. I was traveling back and forth from South America to Texas every 6 weeks and Tim was in graduate school for business management. After we were married, he had his internship in Colorado and the only way I could go with him was to leave my full-time job. I knew we wanted to start a family in the future and I wanted something that would allow me to stay home with my children; but, I didn't think the career change would come so quickly.
In Colorado, I had nothing to do and knew no one! Up to this point, my business was honestly not something that I had taken seriously, ignorantly believing that people with real degrees don't sell lipstick. The longer I was in the company and the more I was exposed to all that this company stands for, I began to realize that the only requirement for success in Mary Kay is a good attitude, not a degree or a special piece of paper. So, I decided to test out all of the training I had received so far and along the way meet some new friends. What I found is that I had so much fun and earned really good money, too! After the internship, unfortunately my husband went through 7 months of unemployment and my business was literally our only avenue of income. I was forced to get out of my own way and make this work for us. Thankfully, this business works when we do!
The big turning point for us was when I earned my first career car. There really is nothing like driving a car off of a car lot without paying a penny! What a blessing! Quickly, I became a Sales Director and haven't looked back since. I often say that God has a sense of humor because He took a tom-boy, from the country, who never liked dolls-- and would rather play basketball with boys than play makeup with girls-- and put her in a company of women for women and then have her driving a Pink Cadillac. God is so good! Today I am able to raise my children in our home, but I make full-time corporate pay without having to be in that corporate environment.
My favorite things to do are spend time with friends and family, play outdoors (we love camping and hiking), play sports and I'm always up for a good movie. What I love most about my Mary Kay business is the opportunity to help women discover their God-given beauty and gifts. I enjoy showing them how to gain more self-confidence and greater financial security while giving them more time with their families. I truly LOVE my job and feel so blessed by God to have this awesome career. This is never what I dreamed I would do with my life, but it is obviously His plan for me because it brings me such joy. I feel very blessed to be the mommy I want to be but also to have a few hours here and there to have some me time while bringing in a nice income for our family.
My career has brought me a houseful of exciting gifts and prizes including a gorgeous diamond ring and 6 career cars. My highest monthly commission check (not including sales) has been over $14,300.00! I truly feel that God has blessed my business because for me it really is a ministry and I give Him all the glory. My husband's support inspires me to be a lifer in this business and watch how God uses this business to make me more like Christ while using me to love women, too. My heart's desire is to give other women the same opportunity to make their dreams come true and to become all that God designed them to be!
